PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas filter consisting of porous ceramics in which a crack caused by vibration is inhibited while inhibiting decomposition of aluminum titanate at time of regeneration. SOLUTION: In the exhaust gas filter 1, chemical composition of a lattice wall 3 is composed of both a main constituent consisting of Al2 O3 and TiO2 of nearly equal mole and an accessory constituent consisting of at least two kinds selected from among SiO2 , Fe2 O3 , ZrO2 , MgO and rare earth oxides. Crystal of the lattice wall 3 is constituted of aluminum titanate. A part of Al2 O3 , TiO2 and the accessory constituent in the lattice wall 3 is allowed to exist as a solid solution or a liquid phase. Thermal expansion coefficientαof the lattice wall 3 in the direction of the flow path of exhaust gas is shown by|α|<=2×10<-6> K<-1> at room temperature to 800 deg.C. Compression strengthδof the lattice wall 3 is shown byδ>=150 kgf/cm<2> when numerical aperture is converted into 0.
