The smart card reader has a detector (3) to sense when a card (2) has been fully inserted in the reader (1), and a lock (4) to prevent extraction of the card once it has been inserted. A lock signal (6) and a card present signal (7) are processed (8) simultaneously, and if one or both are present operation of the reader is authorized. The lock detector is a photo emitter-detector pair (9,10). The lock uses an electromagnet (18) to position a moving plate (14).
