PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a rare earth element complex high in light emission intensity and usable as an optical functional material such as laser material. SOLUTION: This rare earth complex is shown by formula I (M is a rare earth element; Rf<1> is a H-free aromatic group or H-free 1-20C aliphatic group; Rf<2> is a H-free aromatic group; R is deuterium, a halogen or H-free 1-20C aliphatic group; n1 is 2 or 3; n2 is 2-4), and is obtained by mixing a ligand of formula II with a rare earth compound in a H-free solvent. This rare earth complex is put to light emission by dissolving it in a H-free solvent followed by irradiating the resultant solution with such rays of wavelengths absorbable for the above-mentioned aromatic group. The wavelength of laser beams can be changed depending on the structure of the ligand and/or the kind of the rare earth element. Furthermore, in contrast to the case with semiconductors, because a clean room or the like is unnecessary for producing this complex as a laser material, the production process therefor can be considerably simplified; this complex is useful in such optical equipment as CD players, optical disks, facsimiles, remote controllers, copiers, laser printers, large-size displays and medical lasers. |
