PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely and stably carry out cleaning of the riser plate of a footstep for a long period of time in simple constitution by providing a cleaning device consisting of a rotary brush body rotating following to the dimensional change in the vertical direction of the extreme end of a step tread and the adjoining riser plate, and brought in contact with the riser plate on the extreme end part of the step tread. SOLUTION: A passenger conveyor such as an escalator is constituted so that a plurality of footsteps under the conditioning which a caution belt IC arranged on the extreme end of the step tread 1A of the footstep of succeeding step and the riser plate 1B of the footstep of preceding step are recess/projection-engaged with each having a prescribed engagement quantityδ, are endlessly connected together, and it is circulatingly moved. In this case, a cleaning device 3 is arranged beneath the back side of the caution belt IC of each footstep. This cleaning device 3 is constituted of a rotary brush body 3A of which the extreme end is brought in contact with the adjoining riser plate extending over the full width, a main shaft 3B rotatably supporting the rotary brush body 3A, and a support 3C fixing main shaft 3B to the front wall of the caution belt IC. Hereby the riser plate 1B of the footstep can be cleaned for a long term.
