PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject therapeutic agent comprising (dithiolan-yl)valeric acid (α-lipoic acid) as an active ingredient, useful for treating hyperlipemia and hyperlipemic proteinosis, especially hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. SOLUTION: This therapeutic agent comprises 5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl-)valeric acid (α-lipoic acid) or its physiologically acceptable salt as an active ingredient and preferably a pharmacologically acceptable auxiliary or additive. The salt is obtained fromα-lipoic acid by adding a proper base. A metal hydroxide, especially an alkali metal hydroxide, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, ethylenediamine, trometamol, or the like, may be cited as the proper base. The salt is obtained by mixing a free base or its solution withα-lipoic acid or its solution in an organic solvent (e.g. methanol, acetone, diethyl ether or the like). The therapeutic agent is applied by oral administration, rectal administration, subcutaneous injection, intravenous injection, intramuscular injection, or the like ofα-lipoic acid.
