<p>A network peripheral (100) for interfacing to a communication network (107) includes a network interface device (105) for coupling the peripheral (100) to the network (107). The peripheral (100) configures the network interface device (105) to interpret information and determines whether the network interface device (105) is configured for interpreting information received from the network (107). Based on the determination, the network peripheral (100) modifies itself. When configured, the network interface device (105) includes a packet creation engine (122-2) for receiving network packets derived from the network (107) and creating cell packets (140) based on the network packets. The configured network interface device (105) also includes a set of nodes (180-1-5), which provide for configuring the network interface device (105). The processing engine (122) on the network interface device (105), such as the packet creation engine (122-2) and statistics engines (122-3), are formed in these nodes. In addition to processing engines (122), each node (200) includes a data transfer controller (202) and a task controller (203).</p> |
