PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid uncomfortable feelings imposed on drivers by preventing transmission ratio hunting resulting from torque shifts during a manual shifting mode. SOLUTION: The transmission control device having an automatic shifting mode and a manual shifting mode chosen selectively controls a toroidal continuously variable transmission so that it maintains a preset transmission ratio conforming to a selected speed range when the manual shifting mode is chosen. The transmission control device includes a controller 61, which functions as an input torque detection means for detecting the input torque of the continuously variable transmission and as a transmission ratio maintenance means for controlling the continuously variable transmission so that it maintains a transmission ratio appearing after torque shifts due to variations in the throttle input torque that the input torque detection means detects while the manual shifting mode is chosen.
