PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound capable of reducing the threshold voltage Vth of a liquid crystal composition, increasing the birefringenceΔn thereof and reducing the viscosity thereof by mixing the new compound with a liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I (R is an alkyl; X is H or F), e.g. a compound represented by formula II. The compound represented by formula I can be obtained by initially reacting a substituted phenylacetylene represented by formula III with a substituted bromobenzene represented by formula IV in the presence of triethylamine, etc., and carrying out washing of the resultant compound with water, drying of the washed compound and recrystallization of the dried compound. Specifically, 4- propylphenylacetylene is reacted with 3-fluorobromobenzene to afford the compound represented by formula II. A liquid crystal composition containing the tolan compound represented by formula I has characteristics excellent as a liquid crystal material and a liquid crystal display device loaded with the composition has a wide temperature range and a wide angle of visibility.
