PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a stable new compound useful as a liquid crystalline medium, especially the liquid crystalline medium for TFT or STN display, and having negative or positive dielectric anisotropy and especially small optical anisotropyΔn. SOLUTION: This new compound is a cyclohexane derivative of formula I [B and B1 are each formula II (Y is C or Si; Q and Q1 are each CH or SiH) or the like; X is C≡C or the like; p is 1-4; R and R1 to R4 are each H a 1-12C alkyl or the like; A and A1 to A3 are each formula II or the like; Z and Z1 to Z3 are each CO-O or the like; n, m, r and s are each 0, 1 or 2], e.g. 4-[4-(4,4'- dipentylbicyclohexyl-4-yl)buta-1,3-diynyl-4,4-dipentylbicyclohexyl. Preferably, the compound is obtained by carrying out esterification or the like of the corresponding carboxylic acid compound by using an alcohol or phenol compound, or using a DDC method.
