An accelerometer for a passenger restraint system in a motor vehicle includes a housing 18 with a path 42 for an inertial element 46, eg a steel ball, and spring members 22, 24 for urging the inertial element toward a preselected position. The spring members 22, 24 are in the form of electrical contacts and when the vehicle decelerates at a rate higher than a preset rate, the ball 46 moves away from the preselected position and closes the electrical contacts. The inertial element 46 may be housed in a closed chamber, the air in which acts as a damper. <IMAGE> |
