PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent ink from scattering to the surroundings upon starting print operation to cause contamination by making examining the ejection state of an ejection nozzle when print operation is started and making a decision whether print operation can be started or not. SOLUTION: When print operation is started, solvent is ejected at first from an ejection nozzle (S12) and a decision is made whether the solvent is detected by a gutter sensor associated with a gutter (S13). If it is not detected (NO at S13), transition to print operation is inhibited. If the solvent is detected over a specified time (YES at S13), ink is ejected from the ejection nozzle (S16) and a decision is made whether the ink is detected by the gutter sensor (S17). If it is not detected (NO at S17), transition to print operation is inhibited (S14). If the ink is detected over a specified time (S17, S18), transition to print operation is allowed (S19). |
