PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cyanoacetate ester in a high yield by reacting an alkali metal cyanoacetate salt with a halogenated compound in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst in an aqueous phase/organic phase system. SOLUTION: This method for producing a cyanoacetate ester of the formula (for example, methyl cyanoacetate, ethyl cyanoacetate or benzylcyanoacetate) comprises reacting an alkali metal cyanoacetate salt, such as sodium cyanoacetate, with a halogenated compound of the formula: R-X [R is a 1-10C alkyl, a 3-10C alkenyl, an aryl-(1-4C)alkyl; and X is a halogen] in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (for example, tetrabutylammonium bromide) in a two phase system of aqueous phase/organic phase [for example, chlorobenzene/water (2/1) mixture or t-butylmethyl ether/water (2/1) mixture]. By the above method, the objective compound is obtained by the direct esterification of the alkali metal cyanoacetate salt.
