PURPOSE: A transmission method and apparatus is provided to eliminate the near-far problem associated with DSSS transmission while retaining an ability to communicate in the presence of wideband noise, such as DSSS. CONSTITUTION: A method and apparatus transmits and receives information as a power hopped direct sequence spread spectrum signal. The information is encoded with a predetermined spreading sequence to produce a direct sequence spread spectrum, or DSSS, signal, and a plurality of simultaneous radio signals operating on a plurality of frequency slots and modulated by the DSSS signal are generated. The output power of individual ones of the plurality of simultaneous radio signals is adjusted periodically according to a predetermined power hopping sequence. The information is received by demodulating and processing the signal from at least one of the plurality of frequency slots.
