<p>Methods are provided for transforming multicellular marine algae utilizing, e.g., Agrobacterium tumefaciens as a gene delivery system. In particular, methods are described for wounding multicellular marine algae and, by incorporating an inoculation method that minimizes the exposure of the algae to a non-salt water medium, inoculating the same with Agrobacterium tumefaciens carrying one or more genes for introduction to the recipient algal cell. The methods may be used to transform multicellular marine algae for the purpose of producing new products, modifying existing traits or introducing new traits.</p> |
