<p>The present invention provides isolated exo- and endo-glucanase polynucleotides and compositions and methods for modulating (i.e., increasing or decreasing) the total levels of an exo- or endo-glucanase protein and/or altering their ratios in plants. The present invention also provides isolated nucleic acids of sufficient length and complementarity to an exo- or endo-glucanase polynucleotide to use as probes or amplification primers in the detection, quantitation, or isolation of gene transcripts. Modulation of exo- or endo-glucanases proteins can be used for such exemplary utilities, including but not limited to, cell wall elongation or expansion and thus altering the growth of a plant or improving kernel growth rates; enhancing silage or forage crop digestibility; improving plant defense against pathogens and stress; and modifying flowering, fruit and seed maturation, abscission and senescence, and tissue differentiation.</p> |
