PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound capable of providing practicable liquid crystal compositions, and useful as a liquid crystal compound excellent in compatibility with other liquid crystal materials. SOLUTION: This compound is a compound of formula I [R is a (substituted) 1-20C alkyl, a (substituted) alkoxyl, or the like; (a) is 0 or 1; ring A and ring B when (a) is 1 are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, pyridin-2,5-diyl, or the like; L and M are each COO, CH=N-N=CN, a single bond, or the like; Z is Cl, H, or the like; X1 to X3 are each H or F; however, X3 is F when Z is Cl and (a) is 1, ad L and M are each a single bond, or the like], for example, 6- trifluoromethyl-2-(4-propylphenyl)-5-fluoronaphthalene. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reacting a naphthalene derivative of formula II (Wa is a halogen such as Br) with magnesium to produce a Grignard reactant and reacting the thus produced reactant with a compound of formula III (Wb is a halogen such as Br) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst.
