PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a fluorescent lamp compact and reduce the power consumption. SOLUTION: One end of the terminal of an electrode 2 on the power side of an arc tube 1 is connected to one end of the output terminal of a high frequency power supply via a first capacitor 8 consisting of a laminated ceramic chip capacitor. The other end of the terminal of the electrode 2 on the power side of the arc tube 1 is connected to the other end of the output terminal of the high frequency power supply via an inductance. A second starting capacitor 10 is connected between the terminals of the electrode 2 on the non-power side of the arc tube 1. The first capacitor 8 has positive electrostatic capacity changing characteristics in temperature rise.
