A method for the protection against infection of a poikilothermic fish by th e bacterial pathogen, Piscirickettsia salmonis comprised of administering either intraperitoneally or orally or by both routes to said animal an immunogenic amount of a pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a principal antigen, the OspA protein, its variants or antigenic peptides derived or synthesized therof, with or without an adjuvant.
