PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new production method for synthesizing 5-(4- chlorophenyl)-pentan-2-one useful as a synthetic intermediate for agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc., under an industrially advantageous condition. SOLUTION: The objective 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-pentan-2-one can be produced in high yield by reacting a 4-halo-2-butanone with an organic zinc compound in the presence of a copper catalyst and a lithium salt.
