Disclosed is a system and method of rendering an image of three-dimensional laser scan data, 6. A range cube map, 25, and a corresponding image cube map (which may comprise an intensity texture, 26, and/or a colour texture, 27) are prepared from the three-dimensional laser scan data. A tessellation pattern is generated using the range cube map and an image rendered based on the tessellation pattern by sampling the image cube map. A pre-rendering system, 20, may be used to prepare the range and image cube maps and a rendering system, 31, used to generate the tessellation patterns using the range cube map and render the images using the image cube maps. In embodiments of the invention the range cube map is generated from a spherical panorama range texture and the image cube map is generated from a spherical panorama image texture. The image cube map may be generated by providing a set of vertices arranged in tiles for a face of a cube and then, for each face, tessellating each tile and projecting tessellated points onto the face of the cube using corresponding range texels in the spherical panorama range texture. |
