PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means and a method for updating an existing printer according to a new improved print head. SOLUTION: A method and an apparatus for communicating between the formatter and the print head of a printer are provided. A various types of print head can be thereby be adapted without substantially modifying the hardware of a printer. The new printer communication interface or protocol functions together with an application specific integrated circuit chip (i.e., an ASIC) insertion/removal thereof into/from a printer can be modified easily.
