PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a geminally disubstituted cyclic hydroxamic acid derivative effective for the therapy of arthritis, cancer and other diseases. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by general formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. Concretely, 4-[4-(4-fluoro-2-methyl- benzyloxy)-benzenesulfonyl]-3-hydroxy-tetrahydro-pyrane-3-carboxylic acid hydroxamide is cited as the compound. The compound represented by general formula (I) has activities for inhibiting matrix metalloprotease and an enzyme belonging to the reprolysin subfamily of metzincins, and exhibits therapeutic effects on the wide diseases including the above diseases.
