PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple apparatus and a method for cutting a glass tube, capable of obtaining a neat cutting face not requiring an aftertreatment, having excellent productivity, slightly dispersing glass powders and maintaining a working environment clean. SOLUTION: This apparatus for cutting a glass tube has a stationary side retaining mechanism 10 which holds one side of a groove g of a glass tube G provided with the groove and is fixedly arranged, a rocking side retaining mechanism 30 which holds the other side of the groove g of the glass tube G and is arranged in a rockable manner and a driving mechanism 50 for applying a rocking motion to the rocking side retaining mechanism 30 and the driving mechanism 50 is operated to provide the rocking side retaining mechanism 30 with a rocking method, to provide the glass tube G with tensile strength and a bending movement and to cut the glass tube G at the groove g. This method for cutting a glass tube is carried out by using the apparatus.
