PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a color image display device and projection type image display device which display color images by using a single liquid crystal panel, are improved in light utilization efficiency, are capable of displaying a bright display screen with good color reproducibility and are small in size and light in weight. SOLUTION: The respective color light rays of red, green and blue, from light sources are introduced to the different positions on an image display panel 204 in such a manner that these positions are illuminated to a belt form by each of the respective color light rays. The belt-like illuminated regions are continuously moved in synchronization with the image display positions on the image display panel 204 by a rotary polyhedral mirror 212, by which the color display is made. The boundaries of the image regions of the respective colors displayed on the image display panel 204 are displayed black in a specified range, by which the degradation in the color purity by the color mixing of the illumination light is averted. The color image display device and projection type image display device which are good in the color reproducibility and high in the color utilization efficiency may thus be realized. |
