The steering column (2) for a car is fitted with a locking sleeve (12) which can be fixed against the column by a bolt (11) fitting into an aperture in its outer surface. The column has longitudinal ridges (6) and troughs which compensate for the tolerances produced in manufacturing the column and sleeve. Independent claims are included for: (a) a system comprising the steering column and locking sleeve; and (b) a car fitted with the system.
