PURPOSE: To record representative images only which can retrieve effectively stored image signals. CONSTITUTION: When a frame which can be a representative image candidate is detected in step S2, an evaluation value of the frame, i.e., a value of scale of likeness to the representative image is calculated in step S3, and recorded together with its appearance time in a hard disk drive. The allowable number of representative images corresponding to the recording elapsed time is confirmed in step S4. In step S5, it is judged whether the allowable number is exceeded by recording newly a representative image. When it is judged that the allowable number is exceeded, representative images are thinned by processing on after step S6.
