PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely attain engine load reduction by preventing performance of a torque converter from imparting the effectiveness of neutral control, which is the original purpose. SOLUTION: When a shift range is selected in a shift operation, this control device for the automatic transmission executes the neutral control according to a prescribed control routine. For example, where a vehicle stops with a first speed gear geared in or where a shift operation from N range to D range is performed during the stop, the control device executes the neutral control by determining a prescribed starting condition (steps S1-S3). The clutch is held in a sliding state based on the target speed ratio of the torque converter during executing the neutral control (step S4), however, when the engine load found from the target speed ratio is larger than the load in a stall, the execution of the neutral control is priorly avoided without reaching the condition (step S2=No), or the release conditions are formed so as to release the neutral control (step S5→step S6).
