PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnet which is capable of accurately changing the direction of its magnetic field without providing a mechanical rotating mechanism such as a rotating shaft when a relative direction that a magnetic field makes with a specimen is changed. SOLUTION: An electromagnet is equipped with two sets of split paired coils which are arranged in a coaxial manner, separated from each other by a certain interval, and connected in series. The two sets of the split paired coils are so arranged as to make their center axes intersect each other when they are projected. At least, one of the two sets of the split paired coils has a function to reverse the flowing direction of a current, and the direction of the current flowing through the split paired coils is reversed, by which the direction of the resultant magnetic field of all the magnetic fields generated by the split paired coils is changed.
