PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous coating composition excellent in durability, scratch resistance and stainproofness, and capable of imparting coating film having a ground glass-like tone. SOLUTION: The composition is obtained by compounding (A) 100 pts.mass of an acrylic copolymer having an acid value of 20-200 mg KOH/g and a weight- average molecular weight of 4,000-200,000 with (B) 30-80 pts.mass of a melamine compound and/or an epoxy compound, (C) 3-200 pts.mass of a hydrophilic solvent, (D) ammonia and/or an amine compound corresponding to 0.5-1.1 equivalents of the carboxy group contained in the acrylic copolymer and (E) 30-500 pts.mass of particles having an average particle size of 1-50μm.
