PURPOSE: An NR2B subunit selective NMDA antagonist for treatment of a specified disease caused by neurodegeneration and depression is provided which is effective for treatment of disorders such as hearing loss, vision loss, neurodegeneration caused by epileptic seizures, neurotoxin poisoning, Restless Leg Syndrome, multi-system atrophy, non-vascular headache, and depression. CONSTITUTION: The NR2B subunit selective NMDA antagonist contains a compound represented by the formula 1 or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt and may be (+)-(1S, 2S)-1-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-2-(4-hydroxy-4-phenylpiperidino)-1-propanol; (1S, 2S)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxy-4-phenylpiperidino)-1-propanol;(3R, 4S)-3-(4-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-hydroxypiperidine-1-yl)-chromane-4,7-diol;a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt of the above compounds; or (1R*, 2R*)-1-(4-(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)-2-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-hydroxypiperidine-1-yl)-1-o l-mesilate.
