PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a pigment-quality halogenated metal phthalocyanine pigment in high yields without the necessity for a treatment for conversion into a pigment. SOLUTION: In the process for producing a halogenated metal phthalocyanine pigment by thermally reacting a halogenated phthalodinitrile (A) with a metal salt (B) of an aliphatic or alicyclic monocarboxylic acid in the presence of ammonia (C), optionally an ammonia donor, in an organic solvent (D), the reaction is effected by using as the organic solvent (D) an aromatic organic solvent having a boiling point of 373-423 K and capable of dissolving both the halogenated phthalodinitrile (A) and the metal salt (B).
