PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to arbitrarily attach and detach a separation pad by forming both surface and back of the separation pad disposed in a paper separating device as surfaces different in coefficient of friction, and positioning the separation pad to a paper feed roller. SOLUTION: With the separation pad 15 disposed in a document separating device in a paper feeder of a reader mounted on a holder member 20, the holder member 20 is mounted on a holder part of the paper separating device. The separation pad 15 is provided with a locking hole for two pad stoppers 23 in the cross direction, and the locking hole is fixed and held on the pad stopper 23 to set the surface and back (A, B surfaces) of the separation pad 15 different in coefficient of friction corresponding to the paper feed roller.
