PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new smectite which is useful as a ultraviolet absorber and photocatalyst having unique selectivity. SOLUTION: In manufacturing a smectite, a water based composition, which contains basis magnesium carbonate and alkali silicate, and either water-soluble titanate, EDTA complex of titanate or organic titanate, is hydrothermally treated to obtain titanium with 4-cordination. The smectite contains the 4- cordination titanium in its basic frame.
