PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator hoist device causing little braking noise during a normal stop, and being quickly operated for braking at the occurrence of any trouble be bring an elevator to an emergency stop. SOLUTION: A hoist 1 having a drive sheave 2 with a main rope 3 wound thereon is provided with a braking wheel 4 for rotation along with the drive sheave 2 and is provided also with a braking element 5 which is separated from the braking wheel 4 during operation and presses the braking wheel 4 when the elevator is stopped. A damper 14 is mounted in the hoist 1 via a displacement mechanism 10 and is normally held in a predetermined position opposite to the braking element 5, where it is pressed by the braking element 5 in braking action to damp the pressing action of the braking element 5. During a normal stop, a control device 21 disposes the damper 14 in the predetermined position to inhibit the pressing action of the braking element 5. During an emergency stop, the damper 14 is displaced out of the range of braking action of the braking element 5 by the actuation of the displacement mechanism 10 and the braking element 5 is brought into direct pressing action.
