PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic excavator that can secure a space to house tools onto its revolving superstructure. SOLUTION: When a revolving superstructure 20 which is put in position onto a traveler 1 is arranged in cross section to make the structure direct to a front face, a leaner dimension of a counter weight 21 is set so that a linear dimension L3 from a rotation center O of the superstructure 20 to a heel 29 of a counterweight 21 to secure a weight balance with a front operating machine 3 is set to become larger than 120% of a linear dimension L2 from the rotation center O to an outside edge 30 of a crawler track of the traveler 1 but equal to or less than a linear dimension L4 from the rotation center O to a heel 28 of the crawler track. Meanwhile a height dimension of the counterweight 21 is set to a height dimension that is sought from an area of base of the counterweight that is determined from a linear dimension of a counterweight 21 and a given cubage that is specified from a balance against the weight of the front operating machine. At the same time, a fuel tank is placed in position on the counterweight 21, and inside the revolving superstructure 20 a utility space 27 is provided.
