PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hard carbon coated member superior in peel resistance, and a cutting tool constituted as the coated member. SOLUTION: The hard carbon coated member satisfies log10(Id/ Ia)>=4.8-0.8×10-8A, when making the nucleation density confirmed on a base material in an early stage of synthesis of a hard carbon film, as A (unit: piece/cm2), and making a ratio of peak intensity Id which is assumed to come from principally a diamond component, to peak intensity Ia which is assumed to come from principally a non-diamond component, as (Id/Ia), when Raman scattering spectrum is measured at a position about 4μm apart from a boundary between the film and the base material, to a film thickness direction. Then, the hard carbon film 20 has an adequate adhesion to the base material 101. When, the cutting tool constituted as the coated member satisfies the above condition, at a position 22 which is 100μm advanced from the base material principal plane 10 towards a side 11, the cutting tool has a long life of machining materials and a superior cutting performance.
