PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus wherein a sub-scanning reference signal and a main scanning reference signal (line synchronous signal) are not synchronized with each other and an image quality can be improved. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, an image is formed on one photosensitive body by writing of a color multi-beam and the sub-scanning reference signal and the main scanning reference signal are not synchronized with each other. The image forming apparatus comprises a counter 102 for counting positions of the sub-scanning reference signal of each color by being operated by a pixel clock, a calculating circuit 108 that compares the actual count value of the counter 102 with a set count value to calculate them, and a sub-scanning selecting circuit 107 that switches the sub-scanning reference signal according to the calculated result.
