PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to easily select an intended focus detection area considering the detection error of the coordinates of the line of sight with a probability that a main subject exists in the area in the case of dividing an observation picture plane. SOLUTION: This camera is provided with a focus detection means for detecting a focus in each of the focus detection areas arranged two- dimensionally, and a focus detection area selection means for selecting the focus detection area included in a line-of-sight area when the coordinates of the line of sight calculated from a line-of-sight coordinate arithmetic calculation means for converting the direction of the line of sight obtained from a line-of- sight detection means into coordinates on the observation picture plane exist in any of line-of-sight areas set by dividing the observation picture plane to small areas without superposing them each other so that only one focus detection area may be included as the focus detection area for performing the focusing operation of a photographic lens. A central line-of-sight area 108b including a central focus detection area arranged in the center on the observation picture plane is set larger than the line-of-sight area including each focus detection area other than the central focus detection area. |
