PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for automatically controlling the train capable of improving the operational efficiency of the train by controlling the traveling speed of the train by an onboard device installed thereon based on traveling control information of the train transmitted from a ground device to a track circuit and the speed-distance table stored in the onboard device. SOLUTION: In an automatic train control system 1, the ground device 20 reads the predetermined permissible traveling speed information and permissible traveling section length information based on the detected train traveling position or the predetermined traveling speed limit section, and transmits it to the track circuit. The onboard device 10 operates the speed control pattern for controlling the traveling speed considering the train performance and the gradient of the track circuit based on permissible traveling speed information, permissible traveling section length information and the speed-distance table stored in the onboard device 10, and the traveling speed of the train is controlled based on the traveling speed, the traveling distance of the train and the speed control pattern.
