PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift range switching device for an automatic transmission for switching a shift range by recognizing the absolute position of an actuator. SOLUTION: The rotating position of the actuator 1 and a value of the shift range of the automatic transmission 4 are stored in an nonvolatile rewritable memory 203; when power, supplied from a battery 5 to a motor control part 201, is interrupted and is re-introduced, the rotating position of the actuator 1; and the shift range position of the automatic transmission 4 which are stored in the memory 203 are read and are set as initial values. Therefore, when power is resupplied from the battery 5 to the motor control part 201, the absolute position of the actuator 1 can be recognized by starting a control by using the initial values, the shift range of the automatic transmission 4 is switched by driving a detent mechanism and a vehicle can be traveled. By using a position detection sensor 103, durability and reliability are improved and manufacturing cost can be reduced.
