PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relieve the burden on a map display terminal side in converting map data without necessitating large storage capacity on a map display supporting device side. SOLUTION: When a user specifies an area of a map on a portable type information terminal 1, the terminal 1 specifies bite order to which the terminal 1 itself corresponds and requests a map display supporting device 30 via the Internet 20 for desired map data. Map data with the bite order of big endian is stored for each area in a map data storage section 31 of the supporting device 30. When map data is requested for, the supporting device 30 reads out map data of a desired area out of data stored in the map data storage section 31. When the map data are matched with the bite order specified by the terminal 1, the map data are transmitted as they are to the requesting terminal 1. When the read out map data are not matched with the bite order specified by the terminal 1, the data are converted at a conversion section 32 so as to match with the bite order then transmitted to the requesting terminal 1.
