PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide chiral nematic liquid-crystal compositions for affording liquid-crystal display elements having improved characteristics such as a color purity or a light reflectance and a high contrast in an image display, and sufficiently drivable a low driving voltage, and to provide the liquid-crystal display elements. SOLUTION: The chiral nematic liquid-crystal compositions 21r, 21g and 21b comprise 55-90 wt.% of a nematic liquid-crystal mixture consisting essentially of a liquid-crystalline ester compound and a liquid crystalline pyrimidine compound containing fluorine in the molecule and 10-45 wt.% of one or more kinds of chiral materials and exhibit a cholesteric phase at room temperature. The liquid-crystal display elements A and B are obtained by sandwiching the chiral nematic liquid-crystal compositions 21r, 21g and 21b between a pair of substrates 11 and 12. |
