PURPOSE: A scanning carriage transferring device of an image reading apparatus is provided to simplify the structure of a guide rail to facilitate assembling of the transferring device. CONSTITUTION: A scanning carriage transferring device of an image reading apparatus includes the first and second scanning carriages(51,52) and two guide rails. Optical components are mounted on the first and second scanning carriages. The first and second scanning carriages are driven by a driving motor. The two guide rails are parallel with each other and guide the first and second scanning carriages. Each of the guide rails has one sliding face(61,71) on which the first and second scanning carriages slide. The sliding face includes the first lane(61a,71b) on which the first scanning carriage slides and the second lane(61b,71b) on which the second scanning carriage slides.
