PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance electric double layer capacitor having an extremely high electrostatic capacity per unit volume, less decreasing of the electrostatic capacity when electric current density is increased at charging or discharging and able to be down-sized and a porous carbon material to realize it and a method for producing the porous carbon material. SOLUTION: The porous carbon material consists of a soft carbon base carbon material treated by carbonization and activation and its BET specific surface area is 700-2,000 m2/g and the distance between layers denoted as d002is more than 0.385 nm and 0.420 nm or less.
