PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for recovering a coating material by which a line carried out in a narrow space or in a small quantity of the coating material is coped with, an equipment cost is decreased and not only a water based coating material but a solvent based coating material is applied. SOLUTION: In the apparatus for recovering the coating material 1, a fresh coating material is charged to a coating material tank 11 and the coating material in the coating material tank 11 is supplied to a coating material vessel 7 through a pipe line 15 by driving a pump 16 and falls down and flows on the surface of a screen 5 in a work W side. At this time, the coating material vessel 7 is in a most forward position by an air cylinder 8 and a scraper 9 is in a most back position by an air cylinder 10. A work W is coated by a coating spray gun 3 with the coating material flowing on the surface of the screen 5 in the work W side in this way. The coating material passed through an opening part of the work W and the outside of the work W reaches the screen 5 and is incorporated with the coating material flowing down on the surface of the screen 5 and falls down in the coating material tank 11 to be recovered.
