Systems and methods for teaching subjects related to the collection and preparation of collectible samples, such as fossils. In one exemplary embodiment, a mobile quarry, or "dig" is provided where students may collect samples, recreating the experience of fieldwork. Instruction on the collection of samples may be given during collection. A student may take a collected sample to a provided learning center, or preparation laboratory, is provided to prepare the sample for study or display. Instruction on the preparation of the sample and what may be learned from the sample may be provided at the same time.
