The regions are defined by the juxtaposition of segments in the image, which are portions of lines. During the line scan, the process increments, and then allocates a label to each segment encountered on the current line when this segment is not connected to any segment of the preceding line; it allocates the same label as that assigned to the segment of the preceding line when it is connected to this segment; it allocates the same label as that assigned to the first of the segments of the preceding line to which it is connected when it is connected to more than one segment of the preceding line and in this last case, it stores the relationship between the labels of the successive segments connected to one and the same segment of the current line.
