PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stitching apparatus including at least one active thread feeder and capable of controlling stitching operation according to the condition of an stitching thread. SOLUTION: The active thread feeder can supply a thread extended from a spool to a needle assembly, and stitched in the cloth piece. The stitching apparatus includes at least one thread sensor. The thread sensor outputs information on tension of the thread, a control unit including a first controller receives the output, and the first controller controls the thread. The control unit calculates the supply length of the thread, and operates the active thread feeder to supply a suitable quantity of thread to the needle assembly. The control unit controls the active thread feeder using information from the thread sensor to control the tension of the thread. The control unit can detect breakage of the thread or the breakage of a bobbin thread provided in a lower arm assembly for fixing embroidery. The thread sensor is disposed in a position rather closer to the needle thread than the bobbin thread. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
