PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining an accurate similarity detection value of an image or the like. SOLUTION: A standard composed of image characteristic quantity as a component and an input pattern primitive matrix are prepared (Sb1 and Sb3), a weighted vector composed of the value of the rate of change of a reference pattern vector kurtosis constituted of a reference shape is prepared, a standard pattern primitive weighted matrix is calculated by a product-sum operation of the component value of the weighted vector and the component value of a standard pattern primitive matrix (Sb2), an input pattern primitive weighted matrix is calculated by a product-sum operation of the component value of the weighted vector and the component value of the input pattern primitive matrix (Sb4), and a shape distance value between the standard and input pattern primitive matrixes is calculated as the cosine of an angle between the standard and input pattern primitive weighted matrixes (Sb5).
