PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which obtains a fixed image of high quality by applying a right amount of heat, neither excessive nor deficient regardless of the type and size of the recording material, to a recording material during fixing. SOLUTION: The apparatus has: a preheating heater 900 which preheats a recording material P before it is fixed by a heating device; a temperature detecting sensor 901 which detects the temperature of the recording material P before it is preheated by the preheating heater 900; and a control means 902 which, based upon the temperature detected by the temperature detection sensor 901, controls the drive of the preheating heater 900 so that the temperature of the recording material P running into the nip area of the fixing device is within a predetermined range of temperature.
